Another good crowd was on hand for this week’s event but to some extent the on track action was affected by track conditions which deteriorated as the night wore on. For some reason the pre-meeting watering had not penetrated as deeply as it normally does and as the damp top layer was quickly blown to the outside the drier material below was stripped away in many places resulting in a very rough and inconsistent race surface.
This week’s meeting was quite different from last week’s event which attracted a particularly large turnout in the Open Flat-Track class. With a double header at Leamington and Wheatley this weekend counting for National points, apart from Jeff Seguin, all of the experts from this class headed there instead which meant that Seguin had to compete in the Amateur class instead. Sportingly he penalized himself by starting all his races from the double penalty line but, as expected, he was simply too good for the other riders and easily won all his races. The final involved an Indian file restart when a couple of riders went down on the back straight half way through the race. Seguin quickly moved from second to first after the restart and cruised home for the win but in a nice acknowledgement of the situation sent second place finisher Braden Vallee round to take the checkered flag lap.
Fans who were keeping track of the action must have been baffled when inexperienced youngster Gary Moody came out for his first main event in the speedway class although he had not finished ahead of another rider in any of his races. Strange as it seems this was based on the points he scored in his qualifying heats. In two of them he met Greg Starcevic who did not finish in one and did not start another thereby gifting Gary a couple of extra points. That still would not have been enough but his good luck continued when he was gifted a whopping three additional points in what has to be the most bizarre race of the season. It started out with a prolonged bout of bumping and jostling between Gary and Aaron Hesmer over just where they would line-up for the start. When that was resolved C. J. Hesmer then stormed through the tapes and went to the penalty line for the restart. After the race, in which Gary Moody came home in fourth place, the referee disqualified all three Hesmers, Aaron and Gary for the antics and Chris for deliberately breaking the tapes meaning that Gary Moody was awarded the win and the additional points which were enough to see him make the final. Not surprisingly his luck ran out in this as Gary Hesmer made it two Main event wins in a row finishing ahead of Aaron Hesmer and Terry Rideout. Nonetheless it was quite a night for the youngster who, considering how his luck was running, maybe wished he had bought a lottery ticket on his way to the track
As usual the ATV final provided its share of excitement. This time it was Shawn Stys who tipped his machine over and caused a restart that was by won by Jason Stys who dominated the race with a tapes to flag effort with Regan Woodards holding off newcomer Darcy Ryksen for second place.
The Baja class featured the usual close action with plenty of changes in positions in the early laps before Jeremy Weasmer got to the front and held on for the win ahead of regulars Mike Hurlburt and Blaise MacDonald.
In the Youth flat-track class Braden Vallee kept his string of Main event wins going while in the P50 class Dax Laking came from behind to beat Series points leader Justin Hutchison with a nice effort.
RESULTS:
SPEEDWAY - 1)GARY HESMER, 2) Aaron Hesmer, 3) Terry Rideout, 4) Gary Moody.
